The English Premier League is apparently close to launching a two-week winter break. According to the British newspaper “The Times”, the English FA and the Premier League have agreed to introduce the break from the season after next.
According to information of the “Times” not all clubs should pause at the same time, but time-delayed. For this purpose, a matchday would be divided so that each ten clubs would play on a weekend and the other ten on the next. A complete break of the game operation would not exist. Unlike in the Bundesliga, the winter break should also not take place over Christmas and New Year, but in February, because the games on the holidays for TV stations are considered particularly important.
To make the break possible, the fifth round of the FA Cup will in future be held only during the week. The replay games, which are usually scheduled after a draw, should not take place any more.
The EFL responsible for the second to fourth divisions was also involved in the negotiations. Due to the high number of 46 games per league, however, there should be no winter break for the time being.
